Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

While the United States, Russia, and other countries want to use more modern aircraft, Ukraine does not have the same resources to train its soldiers on these aircraft. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. Drones are more accessible to Ukrainians who are used to older equipment such as trucks. Drones are also easy to use for soldiers because they don't need "pilots". Drones are also easy to use, similar to those in video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military uses unique tactics to defeat ISIS in the east: octocopters fitted with thermal cameras that can carry out nighttime missions. Some drones come with anti-tank weapons. They can also light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable, and can carry as much 11 lbs payload. They are small enough to fly low above targets and drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka started out as an IT enthusiast organization. Today, Aerorozvidka is a military-grade air reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka started out as a civilian drone business. Over time, however, it has evolved to a full-fledged unit that is headed by its own leader. Because of export control, the Ukrainian government prevented Russian military planes from entering the country. Aerorozvidka is dependent on crowdfunding and donations to support its operations, since many components of drones are made in the US.

Switchblade

The U.S. military has supplied Ukraine with armed "Switchblade," drones capable of striking Russian tanks from faraway. These unmanned aerial vehicles were designed by the US Air Force as a response to Ukrainian demands. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson said that more than 121 of the machines have been sent to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade is a small drone that is easy to launch from a tube and has a range of 40 kilometers. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft can easily be assembled in minutes for a conflict such as Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly much faster than the Bayraktar (current U.S. ally).

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced that it would provide $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. Unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts" will be delivered to Ukraine. They are meant to terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft can hover over areas for 30- to 40 minutes and are equipped to carry warheads and cameras. Switchblade, which weighs in at 5.5 pounds and can be used to destroy armored vehicles or tanks, is one such drone.

These lightweight, small aircrafts can be operated from land, sea, and air thanks to their powerful, low-flying, gimbal. In a conflict like this, any advantage an opponent has over the other side in the aerial battle is important, and the use of Russian kamikaze drones is a direct threat to that advantage. This capability is crucial for Ukraine's military because it can easily break Russian sieges, and attack command-and controller nodes. While such capabilities would be a major liability for both sides, if a small drone can make a difference on the battlefield, Ukraine could emerge as the victor.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia began integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions into its military arsenal. These drones can be used in the same way as bazookas to carry out lethal loitering operations. These autonomous killing machines may be more common in black markets if loitering drones are used. But experts and observers are worried. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

According to Kirby, the U.S. government has dispatched more than 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to help Kiev fight Russian forces. The Switchblade drone measures 5.5lbs and can hover above an area for anywhere from thirty to forty minute. It comes with a camera as well as a small warhead. It's intended mission is to attack the opposition forces in Ukraine.
