Combating ISIS With Drones

drones with video cameras for sale

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. Although the Ukrainians have received training in Western countries such as Germany on vehicles and aircraft, they cannot receive the same training in Ukraine on drones. Ukrainians are used to using older equipment like trucks, and drones are easier to use for them. Drones are easy to use by soldiers, as they do not require pilots. Drones also have an easy to use interface, much like those found in video games.

Aerorozvidka

The Ukrainian military uses a unique approach to combating ISIS in eastern Ukraine: octocopters equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime missions. Some drones can be fitted with antitank weapons and can even light up columns. These drones can transport up to 11 pounds of payload. They are maneuverable. Small size allows drones to fly low over targets, dropping munitions.

Aerorozvidka started out as an IT enthusiast organization. Today, Aerorozvidka is a military-grade air reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka began as a civilian drone company. However, the organization grew to become a fully fledged unit with its own head. Export controls prevented Russian military aircraft entering Ukraine. Since many of the components of the drones are manufactured in the US, Aerorozvidka relies on donations and crowdfunding to help keep the company going.

Switchblade

The U.S. military provides Ukraine with armed Swaitchblade drones. These can be used to strike Russian tanks up to a mile away. This unmanned aerial vehicle was developed by the US Air Force to meet Ukrainian requirements. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. However, there are no details on how the Switchblades might be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade small drone can be launched easily from a tube. It is capable of traveling 40 kilometers. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft can easily be assembled in minutes for a conflict such as Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly much faster than the Bayraktar (current U.S. ally).

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. The delivery of 121 unmanned aircraft called "Phoenix Ghosts", which is intended to terrorize Russian forces, is part of the package. These unmanned aircraft are designed to fly over large areas for between 30 and 40 minutes. They are equipped both with warheads as well as cameras. Switchblade, a hovering munition of 5.5 pounds that can kill tanks and armored cars, is an example.

These small, light aircrafts come equipped with a powerful, low flight gimbal which allows them to operate from either air, ground, or water. In an aerial conflict like this, every advantage an opponent holds over the other side is important. Russian kamikaze-equipped drones are a direct threat. This capability is likely to be a key weapon for Ukraine's military as it can break Russian sieges and attack command and control nodes. These capabilities would be a huge liability for both the sides but a small drone could prove to be an asset on the battlefield. Ukraine may emerge victorious.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia is integrating ZALA KYB loitering weapons into its military arsenal. These drones can use deadly loitering munitions similar to bazookas. This could lead to the proliferation these autonomous killing machines on black markets. However, experts and pundits have expressed concern about this. So what can the U.S. do to stop this from happening?

Kirby reports that the U.S. government dispatched more then 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to support Kiev's fight against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone, which weighs in at 5.5 lbs, can hover over an area for 30 to 40 minutes. It has a camera and small warhead. Its purpose is to destroy the opposition forces in Ukraine.
