Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. Although the Ukrainians have received training in Western countries such as Germany on vehicles and aircraft, they cannot receive the same training in Ukraine on drones. Ukrainians are used to using older equipment like trucks, and drones are easier to use for them. Drones don't require pilots, making them easier for soldiers to use. Drones can also be used in a similar way to video games.

Aerorozvidka

To combat ISIS in Eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military has a unique strategy: octocopters with thermal cameras are used for nighttime missions. Some drones can even light up columns and are equipped with anti-tank weapons. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka was founded as an IT enthusiasts group. However, it has evolved to become a military reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka began as a civilian drone company. However, the organization grew to become a fully fledged unit with its own head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka is dependent on crowdfunding and donations to support its operations, since many components of drones are made in the US.

Switchblade

The U.S. military is supplying Ukraine with armed "Switchblade" drones, which are able to strike Russian tanks from miles away. The US Air Force developed these unmanned aerial vehicles in response to Ukrainian needs. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. But there is no concrete information on how the Switchblades will be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade small drone can be launched easily from a tube. It is capable of traveling 40 kilometers. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. In a conflict like Ukraine, these small aircraft can be set up in minutes. The Switchblade has a much higher speed than the Bayraktar, the current U.S. allies.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced that it would provide $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. One of those packages includes the delivery of 121 unmanned planes, known as "Phoenix Ghosts," that are designed to terrorize Russian troops. These unmanned aircraft are designed to fly over large areas for between 30 and 40 minutes. They are equipped both with warheads as well as cameras. The Switchblade is a hovering munition weighing 5.5 pounds that can destroy tanks and armored vehicles.

These small, light aircrafts come equipped with a powerful, low flight gimbal which allows them to operate from either air, ground, or water. In a conflict like this, any advantage an opponent has over the other side in the aerial battle is important, and the use of Russian kamikaze drones is a direct threat to that advantage. This capability is likely to be a key weapon for Ukraine's military as it can break Russian sieges and attack command and control nodes. These capabilities would be a huge liability for both the sides but a small drone could prove to be an asset on the battlefield. Ukraine may emerge victorious.

U.S. loitering Drones

Russia has started integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions to its military arsenal. These drones are able to use lethal loitering munitions in the manner of bazookas. These autonomous killing machines may be more common in black markets if loitering drones are used. But experts and observers are worried. What can the U.S. do?

quadcopters drones

Kirby claims that the U.S. government sent more than 121 Switchblade loitering helicopters to Ukraine in order to aid Kiev against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone is 5.5 pounds and can hover over an area for thirty to forty minutes. It comes with a camera as well as a small warhead. It has the mission to take down opposition forces in Ukraine.

FAQ

Can my drone be flown around my neighbourhood?

Yes! These are called UAVs (unmanned aircraft vehicles). There are many kinds of drones today. They range from small quadcopters, to large fixed-wing planes. The FAA recently published new rules on commercial UAV usage, which allows you to legally fly them for commercial purposes. You should be aware, however, that UAVs flying near airports can cause interference with air traffic control systems. To operate one, you will need to obtain permission from the local authorities.

What are the rules regarding drone operation?

The FAA will require you to register your drone. You will need to submit information about your drone including its weight and size as well as operating frequency. A FAA identification number is also required.

Is it illegal to fly a drone?

Yes, it is illegal to fly drones in some countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It is legal in some other countries, such as France and Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia or Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam.
