Drones and ISIS Combat

The United States and Russia want more modern aircraft. But Ukraine does not have the necessary resources to train their soldiers in these types of aircraft. The Ukrainians can get training on planes and vehicles in Western countries, but not the same on drones here. Drones are more accessible to Ukrainians who are used to older equipment such as trucks. Drones are easy to use by soldiers, as they do not require pilots. Drones have a similar interface to video games, making them easy to use.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military employs a unique method to fight ISIS in eastern Ukraine. They use octocopters that are equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime operations. Some drones can be fitted with antitank weapons and can even light up columns. These drones are highly maneuverable and can carry as much as 11 lbs of payload. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began life as an IT enthusiast team. Now, Aerorozvidka operates as a military aircraft reconnaissance unit. Although the organization started as a civil drone company, it grew into a fully-fledged unit with its head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka relies heavily on crowdfunding and donations for its continued existence, since many of the components used in drones are made in America.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplies Ukraine with "Switchblade", armed drones that can strike Russian tanks far away. These unmanned aerial vehicles were designed by the US Air Force as a response to Ukrainian demands. John Kirby (Pentagon spokesperson) stated that more then 121 of these machines have been dispatched to Ukraine. However, there are no details on how the Switchblades might be used in the conflict in Ukraine.

The Switchblade is a small drone that is easy to launch from a tube and has a range of 40 kilometers. The Switchblade is able to hit a Russian convoy 6 miles away, which is unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft can be assembled in minutes during a conflict like that of Ukraine. The Switchblade's speed is faster than that of the Bayraktar. This is the current U.S. Ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

The US announced recently that they would be providing $800 million of military aid to Ukraine. One of those packages includes the delivery of 121 unmanned planes, known as "Phoenix Ghosts," that are designed to terrorize Russian troops. These aircraft are designed for flying over areas for up to thirty to forty minutes and come equipped with warheads, cameras, and other equipment. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These lightweight aircrafts are small and light, and can operate from any location, whether it is land, air or sea. Any advantage that an opponent has in the air battle is crucial in a conflict such as this. The Russian kamikaze drones are a direct threat. This capability will likely be key to Ukraine's military, as it can easily break Russian sieges and attack command-and-control nodes. These capabilities would be a huge liability for both the sides but a small drone could prove to be an asset on the battlefield. Ukraine may emerge victorious.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia is integrating ZALA KYB loitering weapons into its military arsenal. These drones can be used in the same way as bazookas to carry out lethal loitering operations. This could lead to the proliferation these autonomous killing machines on black markets. This is something observers and pundits are concerned about. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone measures 5.5lbs and can hover above an area for anywhere from thirty to forty minute. It is fitted with a camera and a small warhead. It's intended mission is to attack the opposition forces in Ukraine.
